Watercress Growing Guide

Watercress Growing in Containers

A sun-loving plant that grows naturally along most waterways, watercress offers a peppery addition to your salads and other raw foods. While their flavor varies throughout the harvesting stages, it’s best during the cooler part of the year before the plant fully blooms. As the watercress blooms, it loses some of its flavor and potency.

You can find annual, fast-growing watercress, like Garden Cress or Peppergrass, as well as perennial watercress growing in pots that will last for multiple seasons, like Wintercress and Big Leaf Cress. If you want to try growing watercress in containers on your balcony, follow this guide to learn more.

How To Get Started

Watercress growing in pots does pretty well in a variety of environments as long as its soil is completely saturated. For best results, consider nutrient-rich potting mix with supplements like perlite or vermiculite mixed with peat. You’ll want to place your pot in a bucket with 2-3 inches of water so that the watercress roots are always submerged. Change the water once or twice a week to prevent rot and stagnation. Once the leaves of your watercress reach about dime size, they’re safe to harvest, and you can do so throughout the year.
