Growing Green Onions in Pots

Green onions are a versatile garnish that works well with many types of foods. Whether you want to toss them over a bowl of fried rice or cook them into your breakfast eggs, their light, refreshing flavor makes them the ideal choice for all your meals. Even better, green onion is easy to grow from seed, scraps, or bulbs — and you can even find green onions in pots at your local nursery or hardware store! If you’re interested in growing green onions in containers on your balcony or windowsill, check out our quick guide to get started.

How to Start

We recommend growing green onions in pots beginning in early April if you’re growing them from seed. Green onions need pretty warm, nutrient-rich soil (around 40 degrees) to grow well. From seed, you can expect your green onions to be ready for harvest within 60-90 days. If you’re growing from scraps, you’ll need to place your green onions in a bit of water to allow them to grow roots before transplanting them into soil. Green onions growing in containers need moist soil and at least six hours of sun every day.
