Growing Peas in Containers

Peas and beans are types of legumes that are a great choice for a healthy diet. From kidney beans and lentils to split peas and garbanzo beans, they’re an amazing source of protein and minerals that can supplement all your favorite meals. If you’re considering growing peas and beans in pots, you’ll want to follow our guide to ensure healthy plants and a bountiful harvest that returns year after year! Check out our overview for growing beans and peas in containers here!

Getting Started

Legumes prefer cooler soil, but you should still start planting only after the last frost of the winter season. They like well-draining, but moist soils, with plenty of organic matter to feed on. Aim for a soil pH between six and seven. If you’re planting more than one type of legume, we recommend sowing dwarf seedlings early in the season to get a fast harvest and then sowing every couple of weeks again with your slower-growing plants to enjoy regular harvests. You can also buy beans and peas already growing in containers at your local nursery and hardware stores when seasonally appropriate.
