Growing Tomatoes in Pots

Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables to grow at home because they’re hardy and delicious. There are tons of tomato varieties you can grow at home, but we recommend finding the ones that would do best in your environment. While some tomatoes can hold up to Midwestern heat, like Black Cherry Tomatoes and Early Girl Tomatoes, others can thrive even in places where they need to search out the sun, like Sungold Tomatoes and Beefsteak Tomatoes for the Pacific Northwest. In this tomato growing guide, we’ll be giving general advice across the board to ensure you’re successfully growing your tomatoes in pots.

General Guide

When growing tomatoes in containers on the balcony or patio, it’s easiest to buy a plant already growing at your local nursery or hardware store. When transferring them over to your pots, make sure the soil is loose and well-draining, or pot them in a mix that contains perlite, peat moss, and compost for even better results. Place your tomatoes in full sun and let your automatic watering system do its thing. Tomatoes can tolerate temperatures as low as 33℉ and as high as 95℉! The best tomato varieties include Pixie, Tiny Tim, Micro-Tom, Stakeless, and Big Boy tomatoes.
