Tarragon Growing Guide

Growing Tarragon in Pots

Tarragon is a perennial herb favored in French cuisine. As one of the lesser-used herbs in other cuisines, not many people consider it for their herb garden. However, tarragon’s anise-like flavor can enhance fish and chicken dishes, and it grows well with other herbs as a companion plant.

If you’re interested in growing tarragon in your container garden, one plant will provide enough to harvest multiple times over several years. Learn more about growing tarragon in containers when you explore these tips from our experts.

Getting Started

Like most herbs, tarragon growing in pots prefers a sunny, warm spot and well-draining soil to thrive. Make sure you plant it in sandy, neutral soil because this plant hates wet conditions and acidic dirt. You won’t need much watering unless you’re experiencing periods of dry, sunny weather — in which case, you can bolster your tarragon with liquid plant food.

While it rarely flowers and never seeds, tarragon will be productive for three or four years before declining. Harvest the youngest leaves at any time between May and October for a strong, bold flavor.
