Sage Growing Guide

sage growing in a pot

Planting Sage in Pots

Sage is a low, shrub-like herb that often grows wider than it is tall. While growing sage in pots can allow you to shape its growth a little, you can still expect a tangle of grey-green foliage that grows strong and wild. We love growing sage with other Mediterranean herbs, including rosemary and oregano, to round out the bold flavors in your kitchen. Learn more about growing sage in containers at home for easy access to this herb when you need it.

Planting Your Sage

We recommend growing sage in pots during cooler days – like early spring or fall. They like plenty of sunlight – without the heat – and rich, well-draining soil. When watering your sage, check the top inch of soil every few days. Once that area is dry, it’s time to water again. Depending on your climate zone, sage may grow as an annual or perennial. With more heat and humidity, you can expect sage to be an annual. If you have a drier, cooler climate, you can expect sage growing in pots outside to survive as a hardy perennial.
