Parsley Growing Guide

parsley herb growing in the ground

Parsley is one of our favorite herbs, as it’s a lush plant that tastes delicious in salads and garnishes. Parsley can grow up to a foot high, characterized by bright green rosettes. They’re generally a seasonal plant that can create beautiful visual contrast with the other colors in your garden. Whether you’re growing parsley in pots or in the ground, Patio Growers can help keep your plants vibrant with essential tips and tricks. Browse our advice to learn more about growing parsley in containers today!

Getting Started

Once you have a bushel of parsley, plant it in workable ground around spring. We love putting it in balcony containers because it’s easy to snag a few stems to toss into your meal! Place your parsley plants in an area that provides full sun. You’ll want to cover the roots with well-draining soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5 for best results. If you’re growing parsley in pots in warm climates, we recommend opting for part shade instead of full sun to avoid burns on the leaves.

Parsley enjoys moist soil that’s rich in compost and organic matter. Pack in the nutrients by initially planting parsley with aged compost and fertilizing regularly with water-soluble plant food to promote leaf growth.

To harvest parsley, cut the stems at the base. Avoid cutting more than ⅓ of the plant during pruning and harvesting.
