Oregano Growing Guide

oregano growing in pots

Growing Oregano

Originally from the Greek hillside, oregano now grows all over the world. Pungent, spicy, and slightly bitter, oregano is a must-have herb for any home container garden because it goes well with nearly any veggie dish. As a low-maintenance herb, it’s ideal for beginner gardeners – whether they’re planting in pots on the balcony or directly in their garden. Learn more about growing oregano in pots when you follow our brief growing guide here!

Starting Your Oregano Plant

Oregano needs a ground temperature of at least 70 degrees to thrive. Whether you’re planting seeds or maintaining a plant you bought at the store, cultivated oregano will come back every year. As a hardy, drought-resistant plant, growing oregano in pots minimizes the need for fertilization and watering – just make sure your plant gets full sun daily to maximize its flavor. Once your oregano growing in containers reaches about eight inches in height, you can start pruning and harvesting. You can cut back up to ⅔ of the plant for use fresh or dry in food.
