Marigold Growing Guide

orange marigold flowers

Marigolds, like chrysanthemums, are an annual floral that adds bright, cheerful color to your garden. All 50 species of this plant will bloom brightly all summer and fall, whether you’re growing marigolds in pots, window planters, or a garden patch. With our recommendations and guidance, growing marigolds in containers will lead to the most beautiful garden ever! Check out this overview here.

Getting Started

When you first start growing marigolds in either pots or in the ground, we recommend planting your marigolds in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. We suggest buying already flowering marigolds at your local hardware store as soon as they’re available and transferring them into a new container. Give marigolds about eight inches of space and when they start blooming, pinch the tops and regularly remove dying blossoms to encourage growth. Let the soil dry between waterings and keep your flowers in full sunlight.

One important tip: don’t fertilize marigolds while they’re blossoming, as nitrogen-rich soil when growing marigolds in containers will result in more foliage than flowers.
