Growing Iceberg Lettuce in Pots

A rewarding lettuce to grow at home, the iceberg varieties are delicious in fresh salads, on sandwiches, and in wraps. In fact, iceberg lettuce has high water content to keep you hydrated, as well as calcium, folate, and potassium. If you’re wondering whether you should start growing iceberg lettuce, we say yes! Delicious, nutritious, and easy to cultivate, you can get the same lettuce from the grocery store in your garden when you opt for Crispino, Raider, Great Lakes, or Maverick varieties. Read our guide and learn about growing iceberg lettuce in containers today!

Planting Seeds

When starting iceberg from seed, you can plant in early spring, as this lettuce is frost tolerant. Space your seeds at least a foot apart because iceberg lettuce can reach up to 12” in height and width. You can expect your lettuce to take between 70 and 80 days to reach its full size. You can even get small iceberg lettuce plants at your local hardware store or nursery as a headstart!

Growing iceberg lettuce in pots means ensuring it has moist soil and water regularly and frequently. If your leaves are showing yellow and wilted, it likely means your iceberg needs more water. Once ready, you can snip the entire head off at the base and start chopping for your next salad or sandwich.
