Growing Cucumbers in a Pot

Cucumbers are a great choice for novice and experienced balcony gardeners, as they come in a multitude of varieties and they’re very easy to grow. Similar to tomatoes, you can expect cucumbers to prefer a trellis structure that allows them to vine. If you’re hoping to grow cucumbers in containers for salads and snacks, we recommend opting for slicing and burpless varieties, as these have a slightly longer shelf-life and are best eaten raw. Pickling cucumbers are generally smaller, with thinner skins designed to absorb brine. Ready to learn about growing cucumbers in pots? Check out our beginner’s guide here!

Your Quick Guide

When you first start growing cucumbers in containers, you should consider soil, water, and lighting requirements. Cucumbers like loose, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter and a pH level of about six. They also prefer their soil to be about 70℉ and 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. Finally, cucumbers need to be watered directly into their roots, so an irrigation system is best – but overhead watering will work as long as you completely drench the soil each time you water.
