Growing Cilantro in Pots

Generally grown as a culinary herb, cilantro is a flavorful plant that’s essential as a garnish in both Mediterranean, Mexican, and Hispanic cooking. Its seeds, known as coriander, are also frequently used in Middle Eastern, Indian, and Asian cooking as a seasoning. We recommend growing cilantro for any fall garden, as it adds a touch of fresh flavor to nearly any dish! If you want to learn more about growing cilantro in containers, read our plant guide for the best planting time and care.

How to Start

We love buying our cilantro growing in pots already fully developed at a local hardware store or plant nursery. You’ll see small potted varieties available in spring and fall. But since cilantro grows so fast, you can also start it from seed and expect your first harvest in about 30 days. Cilantro prefers full or partial sun, as well as loamy, moist soil. Make sure your potting soil is well-draining to allow for frequent watering without worrying about rotting roots. Your cilantro will bloom throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
