Chard Growing Guide

Growing Chard in Containers

Swiss chard is one of those plants that’s both delicious and ornamental. The deep green leaves blend into bright red and purple hues, which look beautiful on an apartment balcony or patio. Chard is also an easy plant to harvest and makes a great addition to both cooked and fresh dishes. While you might be used to seeing it braised, cooked low and slow with a meat entree, you can also use it in classic salads. Learn about growing chard in pots when you explore our introductory guide.

Starting Your Chard Garden

Chard and other lettuce greens are an ideal choice for anyone who wants a fresh, easy base for salads. You can start growing chard in containers from seed or get a jumpstart on your harvest by buying it already sprouting. This plant is very resilient, so you can mostly ignore it unless you start to see it wilt. Water it when the soil dries out (or have our automatic watering system do the work for you) and harvest it regularly to allow the plant more space to grow. If you’re growing chard in a very hot area, keep it shaded, as the blazing sun will cause its flavor to turn bitter.
