Asparagus Growing Guide

Growing Asparagus in Pots

Asparagus is a delicious vegetable, traditionally grown in deep, moist garden soil. Some asparagus gardens have yielded crops for more than 20 years before their life cycle dies down. However, you can also start growing asparagus in containers if you have a small gardening space. When growing asparagus, you can only expect to harvest their shoots for two to four years before you need to reseed the crop. Learn more about keeping your asparagus healthy and thriving from the experts at Patio Growers today.

Getting Started

Asparagus is a relatively slow-growing plant, so if you’re growing it from seed, you won’t be able to harvest anything for at least two years. Because of this long wait, we recommend buying asparagus crowns to jumpstart your harvest. If you start growing asparagus in pots from crowns, place each crown in a pot about 10” in diameter.

You should start your pot with about two inches of gravel before topping that with potting mix and planting your crown about four inches deep. Asparagus growing in containers likes a lot of sun and a lot of water so make sure you have a sunny spot for your plant.
