Arugula Growing Guide

arugula growing in a container garden

Growing Arugula in Pots

Arugula, also known as roquette, is a very fast-growing leafy green that grows well in the cooler seasons. As a member of the mustard family, arugula is related to broccoli, kale, and cabbage – all bold, delicious vegetables you may want to add to your balcony garden. If you’re considering growing arugula in containers because you have limited space, Patio Growers can help with a beginner’s growing guide to get you started.

Beginner’s Instructions

Arugula prefers rich, well-draining soil, but it’s a flexible plant that can survive in a variety of environments. Use slightly acidic soil and choose a spot that gets at least six hours of sunlight to ensure the best results. Arugula can grow in partial sun but a little slower than in full sunlight. Keep the soil for your arugula evenly moist to ensure it doesn’t bolt.

Avoid growing arugula in a pot with other members of its family because these plants all together are irresistible to bugs. Consider surrounding it with plants resistant to its most common pests.

Some of the most important facts for growing arugula in containers include its ideal zone and lighting requirements, as well as common pests and diseases.
